7th Grade Science Class Field Trip

Last week PLMS 7th grade Life Science students were lucky enough to take a field trip to Will Smith’s lumber mill. Will showed the students how he makes his own biodiesel for his self-made machinery from recycled fryer oil which he salvaged from local restaurants. Will whipped up a batch of biodiesel in a blender and explained the chemical process that takes place. He then revved up his tractor which is fueled by his biodiesel. The smell of french fries quickly filled the air, and bellies started growling. Lastly, he demonstrated how he cuts trees into beams, using more machinery that he devised himself. Will is a mechanical engineer genius to say the very least. He really encouraged the students that they are the key to our future, that they need to be our solution of ridding our country of its dependence on foreign oil. 7th graders came prepared with cognizant questions of the impact that Will’s biofuel has on our environment and overall wellbeing, noting the food shortage that Europe is currently struggling with due to the amount of cropland that was once food is now being used as fuel. Will had a great response which addressed the amount of food that actually goes to waste; moderation in everything and how those that are willing to work to provide for themselves and their families always have enough. 7th grade science has a big focus on ecology, so the students were really approving in how Will falls hazard trees for his lumber mill and how we has very little to no waste products from his business. Mrs. Nokes would like to send appreciation to local police officers Jason Pannell and Seth Arrasmith who joined us on the excursion as well as many parent volunteers. And last but not least, thank Will for the engaging field trip, being a responsible local businessman who genuinely cares about the ecology of Valley County and for encouraging my students to become part of the solution, to be heroes for Earth!
