Rules and Regulations for  Pupils Riding  Buses
 

The McCall-Donnelly Jt SD #421 contracts transportation services with Harlow's Bus Service.  Questions about routes or transportation can be directed to Jack Hellbusch, at 634-1089.

 

REGULATIONS FOR PUPILS RIDING BUSES

  1. Pupils being transported are under authority of the bus driver.
  2. Pupils may be assigned seats by the bus driver.
  3. Fighting, wrestling or boisterous activity is prohibited on the bus.Students keep hands to themselves.
  4. Pupils shall remain seated and facing forward while bus is in motion and will keep aisles clear at all times.
  5. Pupils shall converse in normal tones; loud or vulgar language or obscene gesturing is prohibited.
  6. Pupils are not permitted to eat, drink or chew gum on the bus.
  7. Pupils shall not bring animals, insects, firearms weapons or other potentially hazardous material on the bus. This includes spray type or aerosol and glass containers, matches, lighters, lasers or toy/replica guns.
  8. Pupils shall use the emergency exits only in case of emergency.
  9. Pupils shall not extend any part of the body through bus windows.
  10. Pupils shall not open or close windows without permission of the driver and never more than half way down.
  11. Stay away from moving buses.  Do not run after a bus.
  12. Pupils shall not throw objects into, from or on the bus.
  13. Pupils shall keep the bus clean and must refrain from damaging it.
  14. Pupils shall be courteous to the driver, to fellow pupils and passersby.
  15. Pupils shall be on time for the bus, allowing five minutes before stop time in the morning and one minute before leaving the school in the afternoon.
  16. When necessary to cross the road, pupils shall cross ten (10) feet in front of the bus or as directed by the bus driver.
  17. Pupils not needing to cross the road shall wait to board until bus is stopped and the loading door is opened.
  18. Pupils shall have written permission from the school or a guardian to leave the bus other than at home or at THEIR school, unless otherwise authorized.
  19. Pupils who refuse to obey promptly the direction of the driver or refuse to obey regulations may forfeit their privilege to ride on the buses.
  20. Pupils must make other arrangements to transport the following items to and from school: skis, snow or skate boards, sleds or shovels.

BUS DISCIPLINE REFERRAL POLICY-ENFORCEMENT OF REGULATIONS FOR PUPILS RIDING SCHOOL BUSES

 

School-bus-riding is privilege and not a right.  This discipline-enforcement program is designed to provide safe and quiet rides for all students by disciplining or removing disruptive or uncooperative riders.
Prior to the first bus referral, a verbal notice will be given to the student notifying him/her of minor or continuing conduct that is disruptive but does not require discipline of a bus referral.  At this time the parent/guardian will be contacted by phone.
Should it be necessary for a bus driver to issue a referral to a student due to misbehavior on the bus, the bus driver will fill out a Bus Referral Report.

 

First referral requiring discipline shall have the following minimum consequences:
A.   Written notice sent to parent, along with phone conference.

 

Second referral requiring discipline shall have the following minimum consequences:
A.   Student shall be denied bus privileges for one school day.
B.   Parents/guardians must be notified by the bus service 24 hours in advance of the suspension.
C.   A copy of Bus Conduct Report will be given to appropriate principal.

 

Third referral requiring discipline shall have the following minimum consequences:
A.   Students shall be denied bus privileges for three school days.
B.   Parents/guardians must be notified by the bus service 24 hours in advance of the suspension.
C.   A copy of Bus Conduct Report will be given to appropriate principal.

 

Fourth referral requiring discipline shall have the following minimum consequences:
A.   Students shall be denied bus privileges for five school days.
B.   Parents/guardians must be notified by the bus service 24 hours in advance of the suspension.
C.   A copy of Bus Conduct Report will be given to appropriate principal.

 

Additional or severe offenses may result in:
A.   Additional days of suspension.
B.   Permanent loss of transportation to and from school.
C.   Safe and immediate removal from bus.

 

NOTE:  The effective dates of denied bus privileges will be the days immediately following parent/guardian notification or on the third day, if notification is made by mail.
 

NOTE:  If the bus driver believes that a severe infraction of the rules has occurred, the driver may move directly to a more severe level of offense.

 

EMERGENCY ACTION


If a student has to be removed from a bus for not complying with bus regulations this will be an automatic five-day suspension.  Removal sites are to be at the appropriate school, to police, or to their designated stop.
If the driver determines a student's behavior is creating an unsafe situation, the driver shall stop the bus at the nearest safe area and driver shall immediately notify Harlow's Base of situation and wait for further instructions.
