What is a Developmental Preschool?
All school districts are required byfederal law to provide free educational and related services to children 3 to 21 years old with developmentaldelays or disabilities. The McCall-Donnelly School District staffs and maintains a preschool four days/week for eligible 3 to 5 year old children. This program offers individualized preschoolcurricula that focus on the developmental and functional needs of its students within a typical preschool environment. Five developmental areas provide this focus.
- Communication
- Cognitive
- Motor Skills
- Self-help
- Social/Emotional
How do I find out if my child may attend the Developmental Preschool?
The district engages in an ongoing Child Find process to locate and identify children with disabilities in need of special education andrelated services. The McCall-Donnelly School District holds screening clinics in the fall and the spring (or anytime, by appointment) at the McCall-Donnelly Preschool. A screening will:
- Provide child developmentinformation to parents
- Offer the opportunity of further assessment and possible
qualification for specialeducation and related services
- Inform the public of special education programs and rights.
- Develop a list of potentialpreschool students
- Provide the screeners an opportunity to obtain developmental information based upon observation and interaction with a child.
What to expect at the screening?
At the screening, children will work with a teacher and/or a speech-language pathologist for 10 to 15 minutes. Parents will be asked to fill out a developmental/health questionnaire. Hearing may also be checked. Results will be discussed at the time of the screening or within 10 days. Further formalassessment may be suggested. If there is a need for further observations your child may be invited to attend preschool for a period of time. Sometimes more time and observation is needed to determine whether or not a special education referral is needed. All children who have been screened may be placed on a list for possible preschool enrollment at a future date.
Immunization records along with other documentation are required before your child may attend preschool.
When are Child Find/Screenings scheduled?
We have two full days of Child Find and screenings monthly. Please see the Child Find Calendar.
