Class Updates

 UPDATE: March 22, 2013 We begin the last quarter !

 

         

Environmental Science 

 Focus of study:

1. Students will be investigating energy and performing an energy audit, as a hands on learning experience, with Tim O'Leary, energy specialist. 

2.  Local fish biologist, Gina Bonaminio, will be helping in a unit on water quality and macro-invertebrate species in preparation for our back country trip to Taylor Ranch in the Frank Church Wilderness.

3.  Sound principles of ecology will continue as students prepare a worm composting bin, plant seedlings, and prepare the garden for spring planting.

4. Chickens continue to be observed/studied/cared for. Grades are given for this responsibility.

 

5.  The Environmental Science Dinner Bash will be held May 8th, beginning at 5:30 in the Commons. 

6. Raffle tickets will go on sale April 4th !  Help send students on this trip to the Frank Church!

5.  The trip is scheduled for May 19 & 20, 2013.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE:

 Focus of study:

1. It is important and reccommended that all students read the text, each night, for approximately 20 minutes.

2. Topics include:

       a. Solids, Liquids, & Gases

       b. Classification of Matter & Properties of Matter

       c. Properties of Atoms and the Periodic Table

       d. Elements and Their Properties

       e.  Chemical Bonding and Chemical Reactions

       d. Radioactivity and Nuclear Reactions

       e. Solutions and Acids & Bases

 

 

 

Health and Family Wellness:  answer these questions:

What is your wellness quotient? How healthy is your diet? What prevention measures do you practice to prevent disease and reduce your risk of harm? How do you reduce stress? Yoga instruction will be taught by Ms. Fereday during the stress management unit. What do you know about mental illness and teenage depression and anxiety? How healthy are your relationships with others? What skills do you have to refuse drugs and alcohol? Certification in 1st Aid and CPR skills will be taught by McCall Fire Department's Nick Cappell.  Cards are $5. Take advantage of this opportunity. 

 Note to parents: Reducing the Risk: Building Skills to Prevent Pregnancy, STD & HIV, will be presented later in the spring. Please preview the student workbook PDF on the web page and click here for the lesson topics. An "opt out" letter, required by our district, will be sent home three weeks prior to the unit.  This form should only be returned if you choose to opt your son or daughter out of the lessons.  

 

 

Taylor Ranch Field Station - Overnight Field Trip

Environmental Science:

      2012 students took part in a  trip of a lifetime!  How many students is the country get to travel the heart of the wilderness ?

 

Students visited the Frank Church Wilderness during May 2012. They engaged in field stream ecology and participated in a macro-invertebrate sampling from Pioneer Creek, which runs through the field station at Taylor Ranch. Students viewed 2,000 year old pit homes of the Sheepeater Indians and took pictures of the ancient pictographs near the site. The small plane ride to and from Cabin Creek was exciting, to say the least! To view what happens at the research site, follow the link below:
