We work on linguistic awareness everyday when we read stories! Linguistic awareness refers to a child's understanding of how language works. Some linguistic awareness skills are: rhyming, letter sounds, counting the words in a sentence, and hearing the individual sounds in a spoken word. We will be sending home activities that you can do at home to help your child(ren) increase their early literacy skills, which will help them with becoming effective readers eventually. Like everything, choose 1 activity, make it quick and fun. All learning at this stage of a child’s life/learning career should be fun and last no longer than 10 minutes. The best learning activities take part in everyday life!!

The story we will read is ‘Hattie and the Fox’ by Mem Fox. The story's main character, Hattie the Hen, notices a nose in the bushes. When she tells the other animals, they pay very little attention. They remark, "Good grief!'' "Well, well!'' "Who cares?'' "So what?'' and "What next?". As Hattie watches the bushes, she notices the eyes, ears, legs and eventually the body of a very hungry fox. When the fox lunges at Hattie, she flies to a nearby tree and the other animals scatter. The only animal to frighten the fox is the cow, who lets out a very loud "MOO" and the fox runs away. We will re-enact the story!

We will also sort objects by color, shape and size to continue working on math skills!!

A big thank you to everyone who helped take part in the ‘Penny Wars’. It was a great way to raise money and awareness for the relief efforts in Haiti.
